Need dependable longlasting car or sm truck $1-2 K What models should I seek or avoid? Easy to repair myself?

Looking at midninties +/- . Want something that will last. Live in northern Minnesota. Lots of snow and ice. Seek good mileage but don't want a toy car either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
