Should exhaust valve be white-ish? 4 cycle 1 cyl L 12.5 Briggs & Stratton?

I am removing the carbon deposits in this engine and while the piston, intake valve and the rest of the chamber are covered in black soot, the exhaust valve covered with whitish ash(?) or is of white color. Is this normal or does this mean the exhaust valve is burnt?
