Will a car repair shop take a check from a church?

My church has made an offer to have my car fixed if its under 1000.00 but the check has to be made out to the repair place, i am too embarred to have my mechanic do that he has no clue i have such money issues , i need to get 2 quotes in writing do shops do that? my car a 1999 infiniti with less then 86000 miles on it keeps stalling in the mornings and the exhaust i know needs t be replaced any kind answers. thanks
