Are EPA standards too harsh on vehicle inspection?

If a sensor is malfunctioning, than the vehicle computer is not receiving the information it requires to make the vehicle as efficient as possible, you can try to have autozone or such reset the malfunction code and hope it stays clear long enough for inspection.
