I will be handing my essay in late should I let my lecturer know?

is it good manners to let him know it will be submitted late? possibly a day? ive been goin through some personal stuff recently and it has affected my ability to focus on it, im not making excuses and im not asking for an extension or anything, the penalty for late submision is one sub grade per day late so i gonna try have it only a day. my work is usualy very good and im never late handing stuff in. agh its annoying, but would it be basic good manners to let him know in advance?
